Yirah
Please welcome Yirah to our rescue! Yirah was roaming through a South Florida community for days, navigating canals, dodging traffic, and more. He was finally caught by a good samaritan from another dog rescue organization. She knew to call our GTS volunteer, Rebecca, who lives in the area and is known as the "Husky Rescue Lady.”
Yirah had no microchip and nowhere to go. Rebecca gave him a bath and Dawn (the good samaritan) quickly registered him as a "found dog" through the county, taking all appropriate measures to locate an owner. Yirah seemed to suffer from severe Fear, Anxiety, and Stress (FAS). In local shelters, FAS can be a death sentence, fast-tracking dogs toward euthanasia. To make matters worse, he tested positive for heartworms—one of the most deadly, expensive, and painful conditions a dog can contract.
Despite its severity, heartworm disease is treatable. We knew we had to list Yirah under a rescue to ensure he wasn’t at risk of euthanasia, especially given the current overcrowding in shelters. protect him while he was under a “stray hold”. After no owner came forward he was able to be treated for heartworm and he stayed in foster at Rebecca’s house, where he remains today. He slowly began opening up and learning how to be a dog. We don’t know what kind of home he came from, but a dog isn’t usually born this fearful. We believe his previous home was far from being a true "home". He now is extremely playful with all dogs he meets. He is fearful of humans at first but then warms up. He comes to his name being called and is starting to understand what a belly rub is and why he likes them! He has a strong prey drive, would not recommend cats. Very young children might spook him so although he has been fine around them, would recommend kids over 10 of course only under supervision. He has shown zero signs of aggression thus far towards any dogs or humans. He is crate trained.
Yirah MUST go to a home with a fenced in yard! He MUST go to a home with another confident and very playful husky. Almost 100% potty trained still has accidents from time to time. Yirah needs a PATIENT and UNDERSTANDING loving forever home of his own!
